About this film

Across four decades a humble coffee shop transformed into a community center and the center for the LGBTQIA+ recovery community. Through the powerful stories of recovery, the film captures the essence of joy and the liberating power of drag, offering viewers an intimate look at the triumphs and setbacks of a community that refuses to be defined by adversity.

Meet Me at the Club is a story of resilience and recovery. It’s a story of hope.

A note from the Director

Join Sister Roma by supporting this important film

The journey of this story has been a deeply meaningful and impactful one, for me and everyone who has contributed their time, energy, resources and love into this project. I am especially grateful to The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who have supported this film with grants in 2023 and 2024. I am especially grateful to Sister Roma, not only for her support of me and the film in general, but for her role in supporting the Castro Country Club community. When I set out to make this film, my goal was simple: to capture the essence of the Castro Country Club through the deeply personal stories of recovery. As a filmmaker—particularly in my documentary and documentary-style commercial work—I’ve always made it a point to step back, to let the narrative unfold without inserting myself into the story. But the Castro Country Club isn’t just an idea or a distant subject for me. It’s the reason I am alive and thriving today.

As we enter a new era of uncertainty for our community—especially for our transgender sisters and brothers—we must remember that we are stronger together, and our history is American history. Challenging times are the precise moments when we really need the healing power of artistic storytelling to make sense of the world—and carry us through it. That’s why this film is so important.

In the 4+ years we’ve been working on this project, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing over 50 folks. Their stories have been a gift, far more than I could ever fit into the finished film. That’s why, throughout our post-production journey, we’ll be releasing sneak peeks of that expand on the themes and voices captured in the documentary.

We need your support, now more than ever.

Will you join the nearly 200 supporters who have already backed this project? Together, we can ensure these stories of resilience, recovery, and hope are seen and celebrated. My team and I couldn’t do it without you.

Yours In Community,

Meet me at the club is the inspiring story and legacy of one of the nation’s oldest LGBTQIA+ sober community centers—San Francisco’s Castro Country Club—as told by the folks whose lives were saved.

Ways You Can Help

Donate

We need your help to bring this story to the big screen. So far we have raised more than $40,000 between our initial Indiegogo campaign in 2022, and our fundraising campaign on this website, but we are still short of our goals. We need to raise $200,000 to fully fund post-production. (Did you know that a typical feature-length documentary film budget is between $500,000 and $1,500,000?)

Spread
the Word

We understand that in these times of economic uncertainty, with rising costs for food, housing, and fuel, every dollar is more precious. We are immensely grateful to you for your support of this project. But, there are other ways you can help too!

Tell your friends about this campaign, share it on social media, and send your contacts text messages asking them to join you.

Host a
Fundraiser

We are taking an old-fashioned, queer-cinema approach to fundraising and distribution. As we work our way through post-production, we are looking for volunteers to host a private, in-home fundraiser for the film where they can invite friends to donate. We will work with you to make the event memorable, fun, and bring some of our interview subjects with us for a Q&A.

Help Us raise Finishing Funds

This important film is truly a bottom-up, community-led project. With over 150 mostly small-dollar donors, we have been able to fund our production efforts. While we are working to identify and apply for grant funding, we need to continue raising money from the community so that we can finish the film in time for a Summer 2026 premiere.

This film is a vibrant celebration of the lives and stories that have intersected at our beloved Club, showcasing the strength and resilience of the LGBTQIA+ recovery community. We need to continue raising funds to cover essential post-production expenses. Will you join us in bringing this film to the big screen?

Lee Hewitt

CCC Volunteer, Retired Clinical Social Worker

“I have seen many many people come here off the streets, wanting to get sober. Some people do go out and relapse, are gone for a while, but they come back in here because they know that we’re a safe space, and we’re going to accept them, give ‘em a hug, give ‘em a cup of coffee.”

Thank you
