Community Arts at the Castro Country Club
An exhibition of my photography showed at the Castro Country Club in San Francisco.
It’s incredible to believe that I have been in the business of capturing images for more than half my life. To mark this milestone, I was honored to be selected as a featured artist at the Castro Country Club in San Francisco, California. A selection of 16 photographs—including the photos below—was on display from March 1st through April 30th, 2022.
The show was open to the public, and the selected works were available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds from the sales going to support the CCC and the work they do to support the LGBTQ+ recovery community. I’m greatly appreciative of everyone who came to see and experience my work. The feedback has been really encouraging, and I look forward to the next opportunity to exhibit my work.
About the Show
Anonymous Not Invisible is an exploration of time and space that addresses and re-frames ideas of class, culture, and justice. The only way to change the world around us is to change the stories we tell ourselves, to augment our reality with love and beauty.
The Anonymous Invisible Project
In 2015, Justin developed a proprietary method of photography that simulates an augmented reality. The Anonymous Invisible Project was born. All of the images in this series were created as original images in-camera. Absolutely no adjustments have been made to the original raw image. This surrealist visual odyssey brings a haunting beauty and a deeper sense of humanity to the experience of homelessness. There can be beauty even in suffering, but that requires a shift in perspective achievable only through an unconventional lens.
“We often view the un-housed stripped of their humanity, like a piece of social infrastructure—banal, ever-present—something to be ignored and forgotten.” With the Anonymous Invisible Project, Justin hopes to change that. The unhoused are people too. They have lives, and histories, and stories to tell.

25 Years and Counting
For more than twenty-five years, Justin Schuck has been running around with a camera in his hand. His father was an avid amateur, and his godfather is a renowned portrait photographer. “Growing up, my parent’s couldn’t afford fine art, but we did surround ourselves with pictures of our family life. I used to wonder where my father was since he was in so few photos, but I came to realize he was everywhere. Each photo was a love letter. We saw ourselves how he saw us. It was a powerful draw for me to the art form. You see what I see.” Justin opened his professional photography and video production shop in 1997 at the age of 16.
Since then, he’s photographed presidents, prime ministers, musicians, and actors across four continents. He’s covered some of the most important historical events of the last quarter century, including 9/11 in New York City, and post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. His work has appeared in Vogue, Womens Wear Daily, Architectural Digest, Seventeen, and The Washington Post. Under the pseudonym “J. Andrew,” Justin has produced and directed award- winning films that have screened in festivals across the globe.

The Castro Country Club is a sober community center, cafe, and meeting space that has provided a safe social space for the queer recovery community in the heart of San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ historic district, The Castro, since 1983.
